Join the Camarillo Quilters on a trip to the Palm Springs QuiltFest – October 8

QuiltFest Oasis Palm Springs

Exciting Opportunity!

We have mentioned the QuiltFest Oasis in Palm Springs, October 6-8 several times, and described how the show is featuring modern quilts this year. But it’s a bit far for most of us to drive.

Now we have the opportunity to team up with Camarillo Quilters on their bus trip to the show on Saturday, October 8! Their guild is offering Ventura Modern Quilt Guild members the special “early bird” rate of $65, which is the same rate as CQA members.

This includes:

  • Continental breakfast on board the bus, including chocolate!
  • Admission to the show, including advanced entry with no waiting
  • Round trip bus fare
  • Plenty of sharing with fellow quilters on the bus

The check-in time at the Camarillo Park and Ride (Las Posas at Hwy 101) is 6:30am, and the bus will depart at 7am. The bus will have us back at the Camarillo parking lot at 7pm. There are no cancellations or refunds, but you may sell your seat to someone else.

What a great opportunity to see many modern quilts in one place! Let’s do this!

Location: Ventura Masonic Center, 482 E. Santa Clara St., Ventura
Building Entry: Refer to your email for the code to the building.

Presentation: Becky H will present information about improv quilting, another request from our survey of guild members last spring. Becky has always been on the cutting edge of improv, so it will be great to hear from her!

Refreshments: On the list for August – Jenn Rodriguez, Tisha Maeda, and Lynn Hofflund will provide us with snacks and liquid refreshment during the break in the meeting. Thank you for keeping us nourished.

Challenge: Graph Paper Challenge – From Sarah W. Create a block (or quilt top) using a design laid out on graph paper. Use design from workshop (see below), or inspired by another quilt patters, a specific fabric or shape, a style of quilt. See our Challenges pagefor more information and a link to Sarah’s presentation.

Coming Up: Our Quilt University will be back in session for our first fall meeting in September. Do you have a technique or strategy that you’d like to share in a 12-15 minute presentation to a small group? Judy Chaffee will present “Flip Triangles,” Barbara O’Grady will share binding techniques … per the results of the annual survey, we will have presentations on free motion quilting using a domestic machine to take away the fear of free motion in October.

Michael Miller Challenge Fabric is here!  If you signed up with MQG for QuiltCon 2017, please pick up your fabric at the meeting. Note: there are two different colors, so step up to have a choice.

Quilt Exhibit: We have been invited to participate in a display of modern quilts on Sunday, September 18th in conjunction with the Simi Valley Quilt Show. There is room for about ten large, bed-sized quilts, or more if some are wall hangings.  Please look over your quilt cupboard to see what you can display.  All quilts need to have labels, with your name, the quilt’s name, and date. We will have sign-ups on Monday evening.

Opportunity Quilt:  Our beautiful opportunity quilt, Wonkstellation, is ready for display!  Thanks to everyone who created stars, planned and pieced, quilted, bound and finished — and provided emotional and financial support! We couldn’t have such an incredible quilt without all our members. We are setting up a schedule of Saturdays where the quilt can be displayed at a local quilt shop and we can sell tickets for the drawing.  Quilt Ventura, superbuzzy, Homespun Treasures, and Fabric Town are all on board with us!  It’s great to have such support from our quilting community.  Which Saturday can you help out?

Philanthropy: The heart quilt for the Orlando Pulse night club victims is nearing completion. More details on Monday night at the meeting. Shout-out to Jenn R for organizing the creation of this piece.

SEW-IN scheduled for September 14th (Wednesday) from 6:00 – 9:00 pm. We will be meeting in our regular room at the Masonic Center (the dining room), so bring extension cords and surge protectors with your sewing machines.

Library: Judy Hunt, Library Chair, has organized the growing selection of books and magazines available to check out for a month.  If you have an item at home, please return it at the meeting so that it’s available for the next reader.

Step up to volunteer:

  1. To sell raffle tickets at a Saturday or Sunday event
  2. To work on the Pulse Orlando quilt
  3. To share an idea that has helped you with some aspect of quilting.
  4. To bring snacks for a future meeting.

Special things to bring (all voluntary):

Orlando Quilt – Mini-Sew-In at Tomorrow’s Meeting
Jenn R is coordinating the creation of a quilt to be sent to the Orlando MQG, who are collecting quilts and blocks for the victims and families of the shooting at Pulse nightclub on June 12. If you want to bring materials (see below) and your machine, the Masonic Center room will be available to us until 9pm tomorrow, so we can get some sewing in during the meeting. We WILL be holding a regular meeting (including Sarah’s activity and quilt square challenge), starting at 6 — the only thing we’re asking, for time’s sake, is that folks hold off on bringing regular show and tell — just bring your challenge blocks (see next item). Members can choose to participate in the  main meeting then sew, or begin sewing earlier.

Jenn is asking for the following materials: Two hundred twenty-five (225) 4-1/2″ squares total:

  • 104 pink/red, solids and modern patterns are OK
  • 121 white/light gray/neutral, solids and modern patterns are OK.

Jenn will bring some fabric markers for writing messages on the squares. (If someone has some strong convictions about their favorite fabric markers, please speak up!)

Please contact Jenn with any questions.

Activity/Challenge from Sarah W
Should be fun! Please bring a ruler, any width, between 12″-18″, for the activity and quilt square challenge for August.

Bring Your Quilt Square from the Line Drawing Exercise
Bring a 12.5″x12.5″ modern quilt block from the activity and challenge from June:

  1. Choose a design from the handouts provided at the meeting and transfer the design to graph paper to create a 12.5″ block, using an 18″ ruler. Or design your own block.
  2. Color your design as desired.
  3. Cut apart all the pieces and add 1/4 inch to each side for seam allowance. Cut your selected fabrics using the pattern pieces.

Row Robin exchange: This is it! It’s time for the quilt reveal! Can’t wait to see what’s been done. More about the Row Robin here

Ventura County Fair Deadline Coming Up FAST: Home Arts submissions (including quilting) must be turned in at the Fairgrounds: Friday, July 22, Saturday, July 23 & Sunday, July 24, 2016 – 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. More

Opportunity Quilt: “Wonk-stellation” is the name. We’ll give a progress update to the completion of the quilt, the drawing date, and other details. We still need a main person to own the process of housing the quilt and getting it scheduled to be shown.

Library: Judy Hunt, Library Chair, has organized the growing selection of books and magazines available to check out for a month.  If you have an item at home, please return it at the meeting so that it’s available for the next reader.
