To show support to the people of Boston who are recovering from a nightmare-ish week of chaos, the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild is sponsoring To Boston With Love, a way for sewists and quilters to send a tangible, positive thought to the city and its’ residents. Make a flag (or more than 1!!!) in the modern aesthetic to be joined with hundreds of other flags and exhibited in Boston this summer. Anyone interested in participating should read the detailed VMQG instructions before starting the project; note that there are very specific guidelines for the color palette, size, and method of construction in order to ensure the success of the final project.

Please bring your finished flag(s) to superbuzzy by Sunday, May 26th Wednesday, May 15th so that they can be joined and shipped in time for the May 31st May 21st (revised) deadline.

My brain is still fun with ideas and inspiration from QuiltCon (and I didn’t even get to attend any lectures or workshops!), and it’s been really fun to see all the follow-up news appearing after the big event. Bill Kerr and Weeks Ringle of FunQuilts were instructors at QuiltCon, and have long been makers of modern quilts and proponents of pushing one’s creativity to the next level. Along those lines, Weeks assigned some thought-provoking homework for her QuiltCon students, and has also shared the assignment with the world on her blog. Take some time to look over the homework… is there something here that might inspire you to try something different, or look at your project in a new light, or perhaps even attempt something that you might be a wee bit intimidated by?

Update: please visit the Modern Quilt Guild’s post for more information about the Michael Miller challenge, as well as the new, exciting Violet’s Choice prize!

I am thrilled to see 10 of our VMQG members excited to participate in the Madrona Road challenge! All participants should now have their fabrics in hand. Your quilting assignment is to create a modern quilted item by January 31st (for consideration for the Michael Miller booth at Quiltcon) or as close to that date as possible. Your project can include more of the Madrona Road collection by Violet Craft, as well as any solids. The solid included in your bundle is Michael Miller’s Cotton Couture in Straw. From the Kona solids, we also like Yarrow, Charcoal, Candy Blue, and Delft Blue. Continue reading »

Hi all! I just learned that Weeks Ringle and Bill Kerr (of FunQuilts fame) have teamed up with the American Quilter’s Society and American Quilter magazine and developed a Modern Mystery Quilt! The first and second of 6 blocks were released on September 12th and 19th, with the remaining 4 blocks to be released each following Wednesday. Any guesses as to how to solve the mystery? What fun!

It was so wonderful to see everyone at our last guild meeting, and I’m sure you were all as inspired and motivated by her visit as I was! I followed up with Karen after the meeting regarding some of the bloggers she mentioned as current inspirations of hers. She was kind enough to email links to those folks, and I wanted to share them with you all here.

Maura Grace Ambrose blogs at Folk Fibers, and, as you’ll see after previewing her recent posts, she is currently working with dyeing techniques, hand quilting, and using vintage or repurposed textiles in her work.

Karen credited Jolene of Blue Elephant Stitches for her outstanding Granny Square Quilt Block Tutorial, as well as excellent general piecing tips and tricks.

Lastly, Karen also wanted to point out Kati’s modern quilting projects featured on her blog, From the Blue Chair. Her catalog of completed works is incredible, and I’m sure you’ll find even more inspiration there!

So, it’s time to sit back with a yummy beverage and enjoy the work you’ll see on these wonderful blogs!

After learning of Generation Q‘s successful Kickstarter campaign to publish a print version of their magazine I thought it would be worthwhile to post about other quilt-related Kickstarter projects. The first (of hopefully many) is Sam Hunter’s campaign to launch new quilt patterns at Long Beach Quilt Festival.

I was excited to see that the Quiltcon Block Challenge blocks are starting to appear! Check out the Flickr Photostream to see the submitted blocks as they come in. I’m pretty fond of this great block submitted by Pamela Flam of the Boston MQG.

Has anyone started work on their Quiltcon block?

I’ve been getting more excited about the cross-over of sewing and technology lately. (With a physicist for a husband, I guess it might be a desire to find common crafting ground for us.) I was first introduced to the arduino at the very first Maker Faire in San Mateo back in 2006. I didn’t really spend the time to “get it” back then, but since the Faire my exposure to the arduino and it’s applications has grown, and I’m pushing myself to come up with a fun way to incorporate the technology into my sewing. That’s why I was so thrilled to see the winner of the latest Spoonflower Staff Challenge: the Spoonflower World Map.
