In addition to our other fun activities we will be learning about the benefits of joining the MQG. In addition to that, Kelly Stevens will be demoing some really great curved piecing techniques!
Don’t forget your block for our May challenge which was to make a 3D block using the tutorial linked to in this post. These blocks will be collected and sewn together into a quilt top for a charity quilt project.
Fabric Swap Raffle:
For a fun change of pace we’ve decided to host a fabric swap for our May meeting raffle! Participation in the swap is optional. If you are interested in participating, please bring 2 fat quarters:
Swap fabrics will be assembled into 2 bundles and raffled off at the meeting. Everyone who brings 2 fat quarters will be eligible to win, and we’ll have 2 winners!
We want to give a big “Thank You!” to Vanessa, Lynne and Pauline for bringing snacks to our May meeting.

Do you have a stunning modern quilt (made after January 1, 2010) that you’d like to share with the world? The American Quilter’s Society is sponsoring a Modern Quilt Challenge! Deadline to enter is August 2, 2013, so get stitching!
To show support to the people of Boston who are recovering from a nightmare-ish week of chaos, the Vancouver Modern Quilt Guild is sponsoring To Boston With Love, a way for sewists and quilters to send a tangible, positive thought to the city and its’ residents. Make a flag (or more than 1!!!) in the modern aesthetic to be joined with hundreds of other flags and exhibited in Boston this summer. Anyone interested in participating should read the detailed VMQG instructions before starting the project; note that there are very specific guidelines for the color palette, size, and method of construction in order to ensure the success of the final project.
Please bring your finished flag(s) to superbuzzy by Sunday, May 26th Wednesday, May 15th so that they can be joined and shipped in time for the May 31st May 21st (revised) deadline.
Hi everyone! It was so wonderful to see you all again at our April meeting! There was some great back & forth discussion regarding both the block challenge and the fabric swap for our May meeting, so we wanted to clarify the details and add some information since we last met. In the interest of keeping things modern and simple, some of these details have changed since the April meeting; please read the guidelines below for all of the information, and comment if you have any questions!
Block Challenge (to be presented at the May 13th meeting):
Please bring an Attic Windows block (as demonstrated by Rob at the April meeting) that will be collected and joined to other members’ blocks for a charity quilt project. Use these guidelines for the cutting and assembly of the 12″ finished block. In order to keep the blocks cohesive, we ask that you use black fabric for the vertical rectangle and top half of your HST (half square triangle) unit, and use white fabric for the horizontal rectangle and bottom half of your HST unit. For the 8 1/2″ square of “focus” fabric, we ask that you use a print in the modern aesthetic in the following color palette: black, white, and turquoise. This print does not need to have all 3 colors, but should be palette limited to no more than those 3 colors. You are welcome to make more than one of these Attic Windows blocks for the charity quilt if you have the fabric, motivation, and time to do so! We can’t wait to see the modern interpretation of this traditional block!

My brain is still fun with ideas and inspiration from QuiltCon (and I didn’t even get to attend any lectures or workshops!), and it’s been really fun to see all the follow-up news appearing after the big event. Bill Kerr and Weeks Ringle of FunQuilts were instructors at QuiltCon, and have long been makers of modern quilts and proponents of pushing one’s creativity to the next level. Along those lines, Weeks assigned some thought-provoking homework for her QuiltCon students, and has also shared the assignment with the world on her blog. Take some time to look over the homework… is there something here that might inspire you to try something different, or look at your project in a new light, or perhaps even attempt something that you might be a wee bit intimidated by?
