Slice & Insert Improv with Jacquie Gering at superbuzzy

Join Jacquie for a full day workshop focusing on the improvisational Slice and Insert piecing technique. Learn the basic technique and a new adaptation, a foolproof strategy for matching inserts, simple techniques for adding complexity to a design as well as how to work with even width and wedge shaped inserts. Combine simple sewing with a new skill and create your own linear design. Jacquie will share quilts from her book. Quilting Modern: Techniques and Projects for Improvisational Quilts, as well as new designs to inspire you.

Required materials:

  • sewing machine with 1/4″ foot
  • basic sewing kit
  • scissors
  • rotary cutter
  • seam ripper
  • tape measure
  • straight pins – short pins with small heads work best
  • erasable fabric pen or pencil
  • cutting mat
  • 24″ long quilting ruler
  • coordinating thread
  • starch or Best Press (optional)
  • 2-3 yards of background fabric:
  • solid fabric or fabric that reads as a solid,
  • multiple solids that can be pieced to make a background, or
  • multiple prints that can be pieced to make a background
  • 1 to 1-1/2 yards of fabric for inserts that contrasts with background fabric(s)
  • inserts may be solids, prints, or a combination of both – bring options!

Note about fabric amounts: For any improvisational class, it is always better to have more fabric than not enough. The more fabric options you bring, the more flexibility you will have in creating your design.

Jacquie GeringSince discovering quilting, Jacquie has become a passionate quilt maker and designer. She is known for her “out of the box” designs and unique style. Her work has been featured in both national and international publications, and she is the co-author of Quilting Modern: Techniques and Projects for Improvisational Quilts. Jacquie is a passionate advocate for modern quilting and brings 30 years of teaching, staff development and leadership experience to the Modern Quilt Guild Board. As co-founder and former president of the Kansas City Modern Quilt Guild, she helped build a dynamic, vital guild and her experience in guild structures, membership and programming is an asset to developing the MQG at the national level. She is now a member of the Chicago MQG. Jacquie blogs and shares her quilting knowledge on her popular blog, Tallgrass Prairie Studio and lives in Kansas City with her husband.

All classes at superbuzzy require prepayment and registration. In some cases, we are able to accept enrollments on the day of class. All classes begin and end on time; please plan accordingly to get to class on time so that everyone can get started together and right on time!
